A research workspace built by people who do research.

Ad Marginem is a solo project, built in the open with a small group of friends. The name means "to the margin" — the place where the reader becomes a writer.

The project started after years of bouncing between Zotero, Mendeley, Paperpile, and a growing collection of half-finished workflows. The pattern was always the same: pick a tool, fight it for a month, give up, repeat. So we're building the thing we actually want to use.

Principles

• Local-first. Your library works offline; sync is a feature, not a requirement.
• Honest pricing. One paid tier, no upsell modals, education pricing for verified institutions.
• Privacy by default. Your data is exportable, your account deletable, and we don't sell anyone's anything.
• Built around marginalia. Highlights aren't an afterthought — they're the product.
